Bow River Fly Fishing guide and owner Doug Massig

Bow River Fly Fishing Adventure Guides

Doug Massig -
Owner & Guide

Doug has been pursuing his love of the outdoors since he was young. He spends most of the year outside guiding fly fishing, ice fishing, bird watching, and goose and duck hunting. When he’s not guiding, he travels the world pursuing Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Salmon, and Steelhead on the fly. He was involved in filming a series of fly-fishing sequences with Tourism Canada, the Conde Nast Traveller, a Chinese Game show, and various local news broadcasts. He is in television commercials and print media around the world to promote tourism to Canada. He speaks at corporate functions and puts on seminars about fly fishing, the Bow River, and international fly-fishing opportunities. Doug has a great sense of humour and has countless stories of fish, people and experiences. He has had the pleasure of guiding thousands of wonderful people over the years, and has many clients that return each year to enjoy another season on the Bow and other rivers in the area.

I have been fortunate to have fished for trout and salmon all over the world and the best sustained action has been provided by big rainbows and browns on the Bow River. My fishing pals and I are forever grateful to super guides Doug Massig and Curtis Lawrence for putting us over those beautiful fish - David Hilliard, New York
Head fly fishing guide Curtis

Bow River Fly Fishing Adventure Guides

Curtis Lawrence -
Head Fishing Guide

Curtis grew up fishing for brook trout, pike and bass in eastern Canada. His love of fly fishing brought him west in the early 1990's. He eventually settled in the town of Canmore just outside Banff National Park and has guided on the Bow River for over 20 years. Curtis was featured in an article in Canadian Geographic, and has been involved in a lot of literature and filming with regards the Bow River. When Curtis is not out guiding you can find him with his dogs searching and crawling over log jams for trout holding in water near impossible to cast on the Upper Bow river near Canmore. He, like so many fly anglers, loves to dry fly fish. Whether casting a huge golden stonefly, a foam hopper, a green drake or a size 22 midge - the thrill of a surface take has never ebbed for Curtis; and he loves nothing more than putting his clients onto rising fish. He loves working the water with a streamer as well as nymphing prime runs, which makes him a well-rounded guide. Curtis can cast. Far. He is a great casting instructor and teaches even the best caster something to improve their casting. In the off season, Curtis travels to find fish all over North America. He spends his winters guiding snowmobiling close to Banff, and tying flies and dreaming of that one rising brown holding in a log jam sipping on mayflies.

Doug Massig, of Bow River Fly Fishing Adventures, guided me and a couple of friends last year for three days of fly fishing on the Bow River, where we all caught a lot of big trout. Aside from being very well-organized and knowledgeable, Doug is excellent company. We had a great time! - James Patterson, Providence, RI. USA
Bow River Float Guide Dan Ellingson

Bow River Fly Fishing Adventure Guides

Dan Ellingson -
Fishing Guide

Born in Alberta, raised in the backcountry. Fishing, hunting, nature, the wild, all run thick in his blood. Dan was born and raised in Calgary. He has been fishing the Bow River since he was five years old. Throughout the summer if he isn’t on the Bow, he’ll be in the Crowsnest area fishing the lakes and rivers of southern Alberta. Dan doesn’t get many days off from guiding, but every free day he has, he will be out fishing himself. He is a commercial fly tier, net builder, and bamboo fly rod builder. He always has one of his amazing bamboo rods available to try during lunch if you are interested. You’ll be amazed at the castability of his custom-made rods. Dan is also one of our winter ice fishing guides. He loves taking anyone fishing. From ultra-experienced anglers, to first time fishermen and little kids, Dan is happiest when he is on the water, teaching people to fish.

I am by no means an expert fly fisherman. The 3 days with Doug and two of my friends who are excellent fly fishermen was the best! Doug is great company, an excellent teacher and guide and a very hard worker. I caught numerous 20+ inch browns and rainbows, lost a few "freight trains" and had a great time! Hope to return for round 2 this summer! - Bob McAlaine, Montana, USA
