About Us

Our professional guides average over 10 years of experience each guiding fly fishing on the Bow River. They are personable, funny, patient, great teachers, and really love getting people into fish! They know the river inside and out, and are happy to share their knowledge of the river, its bugs and of general fly fishing.

Doug Massig (Owner and Guide)

Doug has been pursuing his love of the outdoors since he was young. He spends most of the year outside guiding fly fishing, ice fishing, bird watching, and goose and duck hunting. When he’s not guiding, he travels the world pursuing Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Salmon, and Steelhead on the fly.

He was involved in filming a series of fly fishing sequences with Tourism Canada, and is in television commercials and print media around the world to promote tourism to Canada. He speaks at corporate functions and puts on seminars about fly fishing, the Bow River, and international fly fishing opportunities.

Doug has a great sense of humor and has countless stories of fish, people and experiences.  He has had the pleasure of guiding thousands of wonderful people over the years, and has many clients that return each year to enjoy another season on the Bow and other rivers in the area.

Curtis Lawrence - Head Fishing Guide

Curtis grew up fishing for brook trout, pike and bass in eastern Canada.  His love of fly fishing brought him west in the early 1990's.  He eventually settled in the town of Canmore just outside Banff National Park and has guided on the bow river for over 12 years.

Curtis was recently featured in an article in Canadian Geographic, and has been involved in a lot of literature and filming with regards the Bow River.

When Curtis is not out guiding you can find him with his dogs searching and crawling over log jams for trout holding in water near impossible to cast on the Upper Bow river near Canmore.  He, like so many fly anglers, loves to dry fly fish.  Whether casting a huge golden stonefly, a foam hopper, a green drake or a size 22 midge - the thrill of a surface take has never ebbed for Curtis; and he loves nothing more than putting his clients onto rising fish.  He loves working the water with a streamer as well as nymphing prime runs, which makes him a well rounded guide.  Curtis can cast.  Far.  He is a great casting instructor and teaches even the best caster something to improve their casting.

In the off season, Curtis travels to find fish all over North America.  He spends his winters guiding snow mobiling close to Banff, and tying flies and dreaming of that one rising brown holding in a log jam sipping on size 16 bwo mayflies.

Dana Lattery - Fishing Guide, Head Hunting Guide

Born in Alberta, raised in the backcountry. Fishing, hunting, nature, the wild, all run thick in his blood.

Lattery's passion for fishing and hunting was cultivated as a boy during the summer when he spent as many days as he could fishing local rivers and lakes, and during the many winters he spent hunting deep within the mountains, on 10 day horseback trips in search of trophy Big Horn Sheep. He can still remember the first day he tried fly fishing, he knew he had found a lifelong passion, and he dove head first into the sport, never picking up a spinning rod again.  Although his desire to be outside grew stronger every year, Dana was forced to balance his time with his other passion, hockey. At the age of 15, fising and hunting took a back seat, as he moved away from home to pursue his hockey dream. Hockey moved him from Victoria, to the University of Michigan. Soon after, he made it big playing professional hockey in Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Providence. Throughout these hockey years, his deep seeded passion for fishing, hunting and the great outdoors burned deep inside.

Hockey came to an abrupt end when Lattery blew out his knee in the summer of 2005. What was a big blow at the time enabled Dana's other passion to resurface, and take the drivers seat. He put his schooling in Veterinarian Medicine on hold and took a job as a custom cabinet builder to give him the freedom to drop work on a dime and go fishing and hunting.

Destroyed by one dream, inspired by another, Lattery jumped headfirst back into the outdoors. The first year without hockey Lattery spent every day of the season on the river, in the bush, or on the side of a mountain feeding his hunger.  After many years of fishing and hunting, he was introduced to guiding fishing and waterfowl. Such a natural fit, a job where he is outside everyday sharing his greatest passions with people. Dana has been guiding with us ever since.

Darren MacDougall - Fishing Guide

Darren has a hard time remembering when his love for the outdoors began, it's just always been a part of him. His respect for nature has translated into a keen eye for spotting all types of animals, and some close calls trying to get those up-close wildlife shots. It sometimes makes for a longer day on the river after locating and casting to a big rising brown or shooting images of an eagle with a trout in her talons... He is absolutely passionate about landscape and wildlife photography and clients usually go home with some amazing photos. Ask him a question about any of his hobbies and he is likely to teach you everything he can - especially the art of fishing for giant trout.

Everyone has a different image of what a perfect day fly-fishing on the Bow River looks like. Darren is eager to share his best spots and techniques (and homemade lunches) with his clients and looks forward to personalizing the trip to suit YOUR ideal day. When he's not coaching you towards your once in a lifetime experience on the Bow River, he'll be practicing his patience with his 3 young boys who have shown a love for the outdoors just like their daddy's.
