Brook Trout are not actually trout, they are Char. Char have
small scales as trout do and are very similar in appearance to trout in
many ways. The key to identifying char is that they do not have black spots as trout do. What distinguishes Brook Trout from other
char are the black markings on their dorsal fin. It is easy at first glance to confuse some Brookies
with other char such as Lake Trout or even Bull Trout, and with the no kill
regulations for Bull trout, it is very important to distinguish between
all types of char in the province. Insure
that you look for the dark markings on the dorsal fin as Lake Trout will
have whitish markings on their dorsal and a deeply forked tail, and Bull
Trout will lack markings on their dorsal. If you are ever in doubt
- Put it Back!
Brook Trout are imports from the east and are sometimes referred to as
Eastern Brook Trout.
Brook Trout spawn in the spring. They are considered by many,
including myself to be the most beautiful of trout. Often times
fishing for brookies occurs in tiny spring creeks, and with the right fly
rod, maybe something between a 1 and 4 weight, fishing for these colourful
looking treasures is a real treat!
